BIAB or hard gel: which is right for your nails?

It is the question I’m asked most: “Should I have BIAB or hard gel?” They are the only two products I work with, so I can give you an honest answer. The short version is that BIAB strengthens the nails you already have, and hard gel builds nails you don’t have yet.

What BIAB is

BIAB stands for builder in a bottle. It is a thicker gel than an ordinary gel polish, brushed on from a bottle and cured under a lamp. It sits over your natural nail like a thin, flexible shield, so weak or bendy nails stop snapping and peeling while they grow underneath.

I use The Gel Bottle’s BIAB. It comes in clear and soft nudes, and you can wear it plain, with gel colour on top, or with a French tip or a little art.

BIAB suits you if

  • your nails break, peel or bend before they get any length
  • you like a short to medium length that looks like your own nails, only better
  • you are growing your nails out after acrylics or extensions

What hard gel is

Hard gel is a stiffer, stronger builder gel that comes in a pot rather than a bottle. Because it holds its shape so well, it can be sculpted into length: long almonds, coffins and squares that stay put. It is also what I use when a natural nail needs more structure than BIAB can give.

Hard gel is filed off rather than soaked off. That sounds harsher than it is: done carefully, it means no long soak in acetone, and your natural nail stays protected under a thin layer until the next set goes on.

Hard gel suits you if

  • you want length or a shape your own nails can’t give you
  • you are hard on your hands and BIAB hasn’t lasted for you
  • you want the look of extensions without acrylic

So which should you book?

If you are happy with the length you have, or you want to grow your nails strong, book Gel Bottle BIAB. If you want longer nails than you have right now, ask about hard gel extensions. Not sure? Book the one you are leaning towards and tell me at the start of your appointment. I’ll look at your nails and tell you honestly what will last.

Whichever you choose, every set starts with a Russian-style manicure, so the product sits neatly at the base of the nail and grows out tidily. You will find both on my treatments and prices page.
